2024 MACON’S FADING FIVE LIST JUST UNVEILED

We added the Hillyer-Kernaghan House on Cherokee Avenue to our Fading Five list on Sept. 12. To find more detail, look HERE.

In 2015, the Historic Macon Foundation began calling attention to endangered, significant sites across Macon-Bibb County through its Fading Five program. In 2014, the community lost two historic structures, Tremont Temple Baptist Church and the former Charles H. Douglass home, to commercial development, prompting the initiative.

Historic Macon sifts through nominations each year to craft its Fading Five list. 2024 marks the 10th year of the program, which targets historic sites across Macon-Bibb County that could be lost due to insensitive development or neglect.

To date, Historic Macon has listed 20 such properties. Now, 14 of them have been saved and protected, while just one property has been lost. (Previous year’s listings are archived HERE.)

A new list is announced annually, with updates for each site. A property remains on the list until the Fading Five jury, composed of Historic Macon members and community representatives, determines that it has been appropriately preserved or is no longer under threat.

For nearly 60 years, Historic Macon has helped preserve hundreds of historic buildings. The Fading Five program is another tool to help promote the community’s rich, diverse heritage.

NEXT SALON COMING UP OCT. 3 AT HMF OFFICE

We’ve learned about Flannery O'Connor, barbecue, redlining — and lots more — during our series of talks we call Sidney’s Salons.

Thanks to support from the Georgia Humanities, in partnership with the Georgia Department of Economic Development, we’re moving the last fall session out of our Third Street office.

On Oct. 3, we’ll gather at The Douglass Theatre, where author Neesha Powell-Ingabire will tell us about her book, "Come By Here: A Memoir in Essays from Georgia’s Geechee Coast." In it, she dives into undertold Black history there alongside personal and family stories.

As always, our Salons are free, but registration is encouraged. You can find registration links for all our Fall salons HERE.

WE’RE GETTING READY FOR OUR FALL FLEA MARKET

Our fall Flea Market is coming up Oct. 4-6, and our faithful, hard-working volunteers have been collecting and cleaning treasures from our kind contributors for months, preparing for this one-of-a-kind event.

So mark you calendar! Friday is our ticketed Preview Party. A limited number of VIP tickets are $100 each, which gets you into our warehouse at 5 p.m., an hour before anyone else, as well as champagne to sip on.

Preview Party tickets are $35 for HMF members and $50 for non-members. With those tickets you can begin shopping at 6 p.m.

Outside the warehouse, you’ll get to munch on goodies prepared on a food truck from The Varsity, and D J Deck Taylor will spin your favorite tunes. You’ll also get to sample beer from Fall Line Brewing Co. and wine provided by Macon Magazine.

So get your tickets soon to help us plan! You can do so HERE.

Our semiannual Flea Market, at 357 Oglethorpe St., is our only fund-raiser of the year. We appreciate all the support we get to make it happen.

Our mission is to revitalize communities by preserving architecture and sharing history.

One of the benefits of your property residing in a National Register Historic District is preservation incentives. Historic tax credits allow citizens to undertake rehabilitation projects at a reasonable cost and Historic Macon is here to walk you through that process.

A key part of Historic Macon's mission is education. We tell the stories of people who make a difference in our preservation community, as well as those pioneering visionaries whose shoulders we stand on today. Read more about them HERE.
